Thyroxin as a Depressant of the Division Rate of Paramecium
نویسندگان
چکیده
In concentrations of 1:10(4), 1:10(5), 1:10(6), in alkaline solution with a hydrogen ion concentration approximating that characteristic of normal human blood, thyroxin acts like total thyroid in accelerating certain metabolic processes in Paramecium, notably those connected with the phenomena of excretion. Unlike total thyroid, thyroxin depresses the division rate of Paramecium, the degree of depression varying directly with its concentration. This depression of the division rate is due to the action of the thyroxin directly on Paramecium, not to a modification of the food supply.

The Analysis of the Division Rates of Ciliates
1. Analysis of the division rates of Paramecium aurelia (mutant), Blepharisma undulans, and Histrio complanatus grown separately in pedigree isolation culture with the same culture medium, and in the same room at any given time, for a period of 3 years, discloses a secular trend and a seasonal rhythm for each organism. The seasonal rhythm is a yearly cycle with a maximum during July. 2. After r...
متن کاملResponse to Morphine in a unicellular animal model (Paramecium caudatum)
Introduction: Response to morphine and role of Nitric Oxide (NO) on expression of morphine response has been studied in vertebrates. But, little evidence is provided in the matter in earlier invertebrates. This investigation for the first time evaluated the effect of NO on expression of morphine potency in Paramecium caudatum. Methods: Animal after isolation from natural media and specific i...
متن کاملMechanism of Action of the Thyroid Hormone on the Heart
SUMMARY The foliowing cardiac effects may be attributed to thyroxin: 1-Thyroxin augments all anaerobic processes in the body includ::ng the heart, and decreases the glycogen content of the heart ( 1, 2, 5, 27). The resistance of the heart to anoxia is increased in hyperthyroidism ( 25). 2- Thyroxin influences the cardiac weight and prevents cardiac atrophy (3, 8, 10, 11, 19, 20, 21, 30...
متن کاملIdentification of a gene that shortens clonal life span of Paramecium tetraurelia.
We have isolated a Paramecium tetraurelia mutant that divides slowly in daily reisolation cultures and repeats short clonal life spans after successive autogamies. Here we show, using breeding analysis, that a recessive mutation is responsible for the low fission rate and that this low rate is closely related to the short clonal life span. We conclude that a single pleiotropic gene controls the...
متن کاملExtraordinary genome stability in the ciliate Paramecium tetraurelia.
Mutation plays a central role in all evolutionary processes and is also the basis of genetic disorders. Established base-substitution mutation rates in eukaryotes range between ∼5 × 10(-10) and 5 × 10(-8) per site per generation, but here we report a genome-wide estimate for Paramecium tetraurelia that is more than an order of magnitude lower than any previous eukaryotic estimate. Nevertheless,...
